Sea lions at bird island!
On Saturday the 25th, we took an hour and a half boat ride down to San Jorge Island AKA bird island. The boat ride was fun sitting up in the front hitting the waves and holding on for dear life. Upon our arrival at the island we were greeted by barking males standing their ground. The males are much larger than the female sea lions which makes them easily distinguishable. We would see groups of females together and then one male near by. This was because typically a male has their own group of females to call their own. That is why we would hear them barking as they were letting us and other males they were getting to close to their females. We took the boats around the island and surveyed the sea lions. My group was counting male sea lions and we counted a total of 47 male sea lions. After that we got suited up and our snorkeling gear on and dived in. The water was a cool and easy to swim. We got closer to the island and female sea lions came rushing over getting right up close and personal. We even experienced a male coming up and letting us know we were too close to his females. To say this was a life changing experience would be an understatement.
